Facts About Tourism Jobs In British Columbia
British Columbia’s tourism industry ranks as one of the province’s largest economic sectors in terms of employment and revenue, with more than 302,700 jobs in the industry, and generating $18.4 billion in visitor revenues in 2017.
Following is a snapshot of BC’s tourism workforce and projections for skilled tourism workers required over the next decade to support the industry’s growth:
- Based on industry growth and replacement of employees exiting the industry, BC tourism will create 106,000 job openings in the next 10 years.
- There are approximately 302,700 jobs in the BC tourism industry with 137,800 jobs supported by visitor spending.
- Workers needed by 2028 by sector are as follows: 46,400 new workers for Food and Beverage Services; 14,600 new workers for Accommodation Services; 19,400 for Transportation and Travel Services; and 25,500 for Recreation and Entertainment.
- By 2028 the following positions will see the most demand: 12,500 Professional Cooks and Chefs; 11,500 Food Counter attendants & kitchen helpers; 8,100 Food & Beverage Servers; 7,600 Restaurant and Food Service Managers.
- In addition to generating revenue for British Columbian businesses and creating employment, the tourism industry returns approximately $1.2 Billion to the provincial treasury in the form of consumption taxes every year.
