Be Successful in a Video Interview Tips & Best Practices
The workplace you enter today may look very different than it did before the pandemic hit and employers have adjusted their way of doing business.
Many organizations have moved meetings and conversations to a digital platform and video job interviews are the new normal.
Are you comfortable using a microphone, video chat and other meeting tools?
If not, it is time to brush up on your skills so you are confident when talking to employers about your next job opportunity. In addition, you should still prepare for the interview by reviewing the job posting, practice responses to interview questions and prepare your questions for the company.
Here some tips & resources to prepare you for that important conversation:
Before the interview:
- Make sure you have a good phone and/or internet connection
- Download the latest version of the video application and test its functionality
- Test your video and audio connection
- Test your speaking volume, lighting and webcam setup
- Provide the interviewer with a phone number where you can be reached, in case there are any technical difficulties
- Ensure that you have a tidy background or set up a digital image as the backdrop
During the interview:
- Call in or sign on early
- Set up a quiet place where you won’t be interrupted
- Pay attention to your body language: Look at the camera, not yourself on the screen. Have good posture and show enthusiasm
- Dress professionally- make a positive first impression
- Give the interviewer your full attention just like you would if you were interviewing in-person
- Use sticky notes to remember your key talking points
- Stick to the interview questions rather than talking about something unrelated. A good way to do this is to practice the STAR technique
